Professor Michael Withford, CUDOS node Director and Chief Investigator at Macquarie University, has been awarded the title of 'Distinguished Professor' of Macquarie University, one of the highest honours the University can bestow.

Withford is a world leader in the field of laser processing of materials, particularly the creation of photonic circuits in glass using femtosecond lasers.

He is also an outstanding innovator, leading the OptoFab hub of the Australian National Fabrication Facility, and being a founder of Modular Photonics, a company producing devices that transform the capabilities of multimode optical fibre.

Withford was awarded a PhD from Macquarie University in 1995 for his investigations developing high power metal vapour lasers. His current research activities range from laser device development, laser applications, microphotonics, astrophotonics and quantum photonics.

He is a member of the Australian Optical Society and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America. He holds 2 patents and has published over 100 refereed journal papers and several hundred conference papers.
