Researchers at CUDOS produce green light from silicon - a material opaque to visible light.

This is achieved in a photonic crystal waveguide, designed to provide slow-light enhanced nonlinear effects, through third harmonic generation. The new research opens up a new window of light generation within silicon, and has recently been published in Nature Photonics.
