Information for Teachers and Educators

This course is registered with the NSW Institute of Teachers, for maintenance of accreditation at Proficient Teacher/Professional Competence

Optics and photonics form an integral part of Science in Stages 4 and 5, and is central to the Stage 6 Module “The world communicates”. It also promises to feature in the new National Curriculum. Part of the CUDOS Showcase will therefore be specially aimed at high school science teachers and will target each of these stages. We will offer presentations by senior researchers discussing the principles behind current telecommunications, and the contribution Australian researchers are making to the next generation of this technology. The presentations will be illustrated by new and specifically developed demonstrations which bring the content to life. The event will be recorded and made available on the web for direct classroom use.

We will offer resources to all attendees, including gratings, lenses and mirrors, optical fibre, and a hologram, and descriptions of associated experiments. These experiments target specific HSC learning outcomes and can be carried out as demonstration in the classroom, or by students in pracs or in a self-directed project. Researchers and postgraduate students will be on-hand to help use these resources so you can take full advantage of them.

We are very proud of our alumni, who have gone on to great things in all parts of the globe, from Hawaii, to Copenhagen, London and Silicon Valley in California. A short video will introduce you to some of these very impressive individuals and will give an idea of where a science degree can take you.

This part of the showcase runs from 4:30 until 6:00 pm. It starts in the lecture theatre with the presentations and demonstrations, and the video, and the classroom resources will be made available too. Afterwards you can network with colleagues and with CUDOS postgraduate students and researchers, who can also help use the resources in the classroom to the best effect. Outcomes of CUDOS’ cutting edge research will be showcased; you will see where our optics and photonics research is heading and how these pivotal technologies will change society over the coming decades in areas as diverse as environmental monitoring and communications.
